Keeping it Together is the autobiography of an intelligent and spirited woman, Marichelle Roque-Lutz. Her style is candid and breezy, although it turns tender and affectionate when she writes of her four daughters. The three sections cover the Philippines, Nigeria, and America. The first part is the fastest paced, narrating her youth, loves, marriage, motherhood, separation, relationshop and finally a lasting marriage to a foreigner ten years her junior. The second part of introduces us to life in Nigeria, in general familiar for being like us a Third World Country but infamiliar for its individual cultural characteristics. The third part finds her settling in the United States where she is finally reunited with all her daughters and pursues her literary interests. It is a time when the freedom of manners has expanded to the freedom of morals and she had to be there for her daughters. Ms. Roque-Lutz displays excellent taste in classical music and an admirable opposition to the Macros dictatorship. She is reticent about her religious evolution. Toward the end, however, she finally narrates briefly her more internal spiritual journey from rigid Catholic through various stages of religious experience to an abandonment of Christianity, although she is a member of a Christian church community that tolerates her searching mode. As a searcher one hopes she finds what she is looking for. -Benito Jr. Legarda, historian, author
