In this third volume of Jesuit Missionary Letters from Mindanao by Fr. Jose S. Arcilla, one gets an insight into the mission work in the Davao district which geographically comprehended southeastern Mindanao. The events that took place in this district, which immediately drew the Jesuit Mission into its orbit, ranged from the day-to-day livelihood concerns of the Christian communities to the realities of tribal disturbances including relations with the Moro settlements, aggravated by incidents of Spanish abuses of native rights. In particular, the period after 1880 until 1896 was marked by unrest in the Cotabato-Lanao area where the Spanish military operations against Datu Utu of Maguindanao not end until 1887 when Datu Utu accepted the peace settlement.
