Jesuit Missionary Letters from Mindanao Vol. 1 Rio Grande (Php 650)
Because of the increasing importance of Mindanao in the development plans of the Philippines in contemporary times, it is imperative to know and understand the history of the region, its inhabitants, resources, and cultures, Vital in this effort are the primary data which are preserved in diaries, memoirs, logbooks, records, correspondences, and accounts of foreign travelers who had visited the region. But the most significant of these materials are the Spanish colonial records especially during the last half of the nineteenth century when Spanish rule succeeded in consolidating its presence in the region. Town building and community formation brought drastic changes in the political, economic, social, and cultural life of the region often marked by internal conflicts and other forms of reactions from various groups including the Moros. No other primary sources can provide the substantial data for reconstructing the late nineteenth century history and culture of Mindanao than the collection of Jesuit report savers. and studies on the various aspects of regional life.
