By Jovita O. Calixihan and Lucesa Y. Diano

Reading literature is like looking at a painting or a mural. While looking at a painting, we see beyond it. In a painting, we find meanings interpreted to us by the artist which our own eyes would not have seen. Stepped in values, the selections can be vehicles for character formation. The teacher only needs to be alert to such opportunities because in so doing, she will be maximizing the role of literature in youth's formation. When that happens, then this volume will truly realize its objectives--to offer maximum enjoyment while at the same time educating the mind and the heart.
