Poetry collection by Angela Narciso Torres, Willow Books Literature Awards Grand Prize Winner in Poetry. Part memoir, part love letter to the Philippines of her youth, Blood Orange has received critical acclaim for its ability to be at once vividly present in the moment and fully attuned to the under-dwelling currents of history.
"In a world grown increasingly disjointed, there must be a place for poetry that celebrates family. But if poetry itself has become perishable, as the sports writing poet Recah Trinidad says, what does that make family? One big happy worm family? Not yet, not yet, because in Blood Orange there's still room for innocence and beauty to be born." -The Philippine Star, Juanito Arcellana. "What Angela Torres seeks, and what she gives us again and again in these fine poems--when she sees a branch bent by the weight of blood oranges the children have already picked and eaten, when she remembers the warm scent of night jasmine drifting into the window from the porch, when she describes her father's care with the remnant of a bar of soap gone thin during the days of her mother's absence--. . . . is the amazing vividness of a world that flourishes in the moment of its vanishing." -Brooks Haxton, author of three books of poetry; professor at Syracuse Univ. & Warren Wilson MFA Program
