(Maraan) is one of very few Filipino 'academic' writers I know who can slip in and out of different writing modes as befits her different roles--those of writer of fiction, teacher of literature and creative writing, and writer of essays on literature and creative writing. I guess it's also because in her case, her heart is in each of her roles.
She is highly competent and proficient in using English as her medium; her writing style marked by simplicity and clarity of language, without being simplistic and prosaic. By itself, this is remarkable and refreshing, given the current trends toward postmodernist writing...
The non-specialist reader can and will certainly enjoy her book the most!
