"As to the items selected, only two excerpts are critical of Zionism, albeit the point is not relevant with regard to a number of the excerpts. The two critical items are good ones indeed but are offset by seven pro-Zionist items in the final section of the anthology. Both critical items are also labeled as such, one by the editor's title and one by a postscript to the original article by the magazine editor, rather as if an apology were necessary. Like any evaluation, criticism of Zionism or Israel or even of their American supporters need not be hesitant or embarrassed when it is informed and honest. Literalists must not be allowed to dictate either their theology or their ethics to those—one may hope they are the majority—who accept a spiritual Zion, a covenant that applies to the church, and a divine grace and mercy for all peoples equally. Handy's anthology certainly is, as he hoped it would be, a helpful contribution to the reality that "the more recent years cannot be fully understood apart from serious consideration of the century and a half that preceded them." -Colbert C.
