A high degree of culture existed in the Philippines over 2,000 years ago, and important finds of superb gold objects from the southern islands attest to this fact. The Chinese traded objects of porcelain for those of gold, rare woods, and spices. This trade flourished actively from about the 5th century A.D. until the end of the Ch'ing Dynasty (1912) with the most active periods being the Sung Dynasty (960-1279), Yuan Dynasty (1260-1368), and the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Extensive archeological field work is now being done, and many fine examples of Chinese ceramics have come to light. The Spaniards came in the early 16th century and by the 1590's, the University of Santo Tomas had already been established in Manila. After this time, a great trade flourished between another Spanish colony, Mexico. It is hoped by this exhibition will help the viewer perceive Philippine culture with new eyes and with the respect it deserves." David Kamansky Director, Pacific Asia Museum June 1984

Paperback: 92 pages
Publisher: Pacific Asia Museum; 1st edition (July 1, 1984)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 029596535-5
ISBN-13: 978-0-29-596535-2
Package Dimensions: 8.4 x 5.8 x 0.7 inches
Shipping Weight: 1.1 pounds
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/f2cfef687f55c832133c150c8b7363d0.jpg?v=1616549542
at-home-with-filipino-art-and-artists-by-ma-alessandra-l-hermano
At Home with Filipino Art and Artists by Ma. His era, marked by worldwide social and political sturggles for emancipation, began with the birth of Russian playwright Anton Checkov, german composer Gustav Mahler, and Polish pianist-statesman Ignace Paderewski in 1860. Rizal was the most senior among his generation of Asia's internationally acclaimed thinkers and statesman who include Rabindranath Tagore, Sun Yat Sen, and Mahatma Gandhi. The beautiful pictures and simple narrative of this book pay homage to the achievements of a great human being. A multitude of historical works about Rizal, conflicting conjectures, family lore, legendary claims and memorabilia have been crafted into an ennobling series of articles. They introduce a great Filipino to a new generation seeking to comprehend the Asia-Pacific saga. Rizal lived only 35 years, during which he showed unusually enlightened understand of his times as well as the future of his people and their neighbors in the region. Rizal championed a nationalism for Asia founded on education of the masses and human rights--always aware that the "slaves of today" can become the "tyrants of tomorrow." His poignant poem, written prior to facing the colonizer's firing squad, was recited by Indonesian soldiers of independence before going into battle.
