Combining these accounts with historical and archival records, Manila newspapers, and U.S. government documents, Ephraim constructs a detailed account of this little-known chapter of world history. The Jews who escaped to Manila recall the long, dangerous trek from Europe to the Philippines and the elaborate series of permits, visas, and travel tickets it required. They describe the lives they built in Manila upon their arrival and the events surrounding the Japanese invasion. Under the Japanese occupation the Jews, barely settled, were faced afresh with oppression, imprisonment, torture, and death. With the rise of Nazism in the 1930s more than a thousand European Jews sought refuge in the Philippines, joining the small Jewish population of Manila. When the Japanese invaded the islands in 1941, the peaceful existence of the barely settled Jews filled with the kinds of uncertainties and oppression they thought they had left behind. Escape to Manila gathers the testimonies of thirty-six refugees, who describe the difficult journey to Manila, the lives they built there, and the events surrounding the Japanese invasion. Combining these accounts with historical and archival records, Manila newspapers, and U.S. government documents, Frank Ephraim constructs a detailed account of this little-known chapter of world history.

Hardcover: 248 pages
Publisher: University of Illinois Press; 1st Printing edition (August 12, 2003)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 025202845-7
ISBN-13: 978-02-5-202845-8
Product Dimensions: 6 x 1 x 9 inches
Shipping Weight: 1.2 pounds
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/5bb6f54283b4be805ca45db7505ce1a3.jpg?v=1616549582
manila-a-memoir-of-love-loss-by-purita-echevarria-de-gonzalez
Manila: A Memoir of Love & Loss by Purita Echevarria De Gonzalez (Out of Print)
A beautifully written memoir making a distinctive contribution to Australian literature concerning the immigrant experience.

Purita Echevarria de Gonzalez was born in Manila in the 1920s and describes an enchanted world, forever lost, with great poignancy and compelling immediacy. The outbreak of the war, however, brought an end to the good life. General Douglas MacArthur, hoping to protect the Pearl of the Orient, declared the Philippine capital an open city and evacuated his forces. The Japanese seized Manila on January 2, 1942, rounding up and interning thousands of Americans.
MacArthur, who escaped soon after to Australia, famously vowed to return. For nearly three years, he clawed his way north, obsessed with redeeming his promise and turning his earlier defeat into victory. By early 1945, he prepared to liberate Manila, a city whose residents by then faced widespread starvation. Convinced the Japanese would abandon the city as he did, MacArthur planned a victory parade down Dewey Boulevard. But the enemy had other plans. Determined to fight to the death, Japanese marines barricaded intersections, converted buildings into fortresses, and booby-trapped stores, graveyards, and even dead bodies.
The twenty-nine-day battle to liberate Manila resulted in the catastrophic destruction of the city and a rampage by Japanese forces that brutalized the civilian population. Landmarks were demolished, houses were torched, suspected resistance fighters were tortured and killed, countless women were raped, and their husbands and children were murdered. American troops had no choice but to battle the enemy, floor by floor and even room by room, through schools, hospitals, and even sports stadiums. In the end, an estimated 100,000 civilians lost their lives in a massacre as heinous as the Rape of Nanking.
Based on extensive research in the United States and the Philippines, including war-crimes testimony, after-action reports, and survivor interviews, Rampage recounts one of the most heartbreaking chapters of Pacific war history.
16 pages of illustrations; 10 maps

About the Author
James M. And yet, the Philippine Islands and its people have received only small subheadings in many American textbooks and histories. The wartime experiences from the perspectives of the Philippine people have gone unnoticed and have become overshadowed by the socio-political dominating legacy of American figures like General MacArthur, leader and historical symbol of the Pacific Theater during World War II. MacArthur’s famous phrase “I came through and shall return” are etched into every facet of World War II historical narratives, textbooks, and monuments that pay tribute to the Allied forces in the retaking of the Pacific from the Japanese. But It is the lesser known people and leaders of the Philippine resistance against the Axis powers whose efforts and contributions allowed for the effective and speedy return of MacArthur’s military forces.

The Philippine guerrilla resistance consisted of a diverse cast of Filipino men and women, ethnic and indigenous minorities, American and European immigrants and soldiers, young and old, rich and poor, from farmer to politician. The various units of Philippine guerrillas, their tactics, military resources, and vigor to survive and end the Japanese maltreatment of the Philippine peoples paint the Pacific Theater from 1941-1945 as desperate, dark, and bloody for Asian communities throughout East and Southeast Asia. But their resourcefulness, cooperative efforts to collaborate and network with MacArthur across the South Pacific, and their massive grassroots liberation movement directly point to the remarkable value that the Philippine Underground Resistance proved to be in aiding the Allies’ ability to retake the Pacific. For four years, Filipino guerrillas faced battles and scenarios on over fifteen islands that make up the 7000 islands of the Philippine Archipelago where the odds of having both military strength and resources were not in their favor. But with unrelenting hardiness and hope to end the Japanese occupation, the Filipino guerrillas from island to island weakened the military presence of the Japanese throughout the Philippine Islands making the Philippines the last Allied stronghold of the Pacific. " - Excerpts from the publisher's website.

Item Weight : 8.6 ounces
Paperback : 169 pages
ISBN-10 : 194776602-3
ISBN-13 : 978-19-4-776602-0
Product Dimensions : 5 x 0.43 x 8 inches
Publisher : Pacific Atrocities Education (September 10, 2017)
Language: : English
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/2b5493e1eb15e7d14e16b6c2177343fa.jpg?v=1616551512
the-huk-rebellion-a-study-of-peasant-revolt-in-the-philippines-by-benedict-kerkvliet-out-of-print
The Huk Rebellion: A Study of Peasant Revolt in the Philippines by Benedict Kerkvliet (Out of Print)

Out of print title.
We only have 1 copy left. If interested, email us: LNL.philippinebookshop@yahoo.com but do not pay for your order first. Other causes were government and landlords’ hostile responses to peasants’ organizations and increasing electoral strength in the 1930s and mid 1940s. Aspects of the Japanese occupation in the Philippines (1942-1945) were also important factors. In a concluding chapter, Kerkvliet explains how his findings differ from those of earlier writers and offers propositions relevant to peasant movements elsewhere.

Kerkvliet’s analysis combines an investigation of agrarian conditions in one province (Nueva Ecija) with an analysis of rural dynamics in central Luzon as a whole. Thus, the book interweaves a local study with a regional one. The author’s aim is to view the Huk rebellion from the standpoint of its participants and sympathizers rather than from the perspective of government officials and counter-insurgency strategists. Using editorial cartoons, the author proves that pictorial documents are potentially as rich in information as written documents. This book highlights the perspective of the popular press instead of the commonly solicited viewpoints of policy makers. More importantly, the author reads the editorial cartoons as symbolic language where images and text reveal more than what they signify at a cursory glance. By so doing, the author has identified, interpreted, and analyzed different levels of synthesis used to represent the Japanese in Philippine editorial cartoons of this period. While many of the symbols used were reflective of the inherent tensions in Philippines-Japan relations, factors such as conventions of the medium of cartooning, individual styles, and personal interpretation also significantly affected the occurrence, change, and continuity of the images." -Excerpts from the publisher's website.
A Philippine import. It was no less than the capture of Japan’s “Plan Z”—the Empire’s fully detailed strategy for prosecuting the last stages of the Pacific War. It’s a story of happenstance, mayhem, and intrigue, and resulted directly in the spectacular U.S. victory in the Philippine Sea and MacArthur’s early return to Manila, doubtless shortening WWII by months. One night in April 1944, Admiral Koga (successor to Yamamoto), commander-in-chief of Japanese forces in the Pacific, took off in a seaplane to establish new headquarters.

For security reasons he had his chief-of-staff, Rear Admiral Fukudome, fly in a separate seaplane. But both aircraft ran into a tremendous typhoon and were knocked out of the skies. Koga’s plane crashed with the loss of all hands. Fukudome’s crash landed into the sea off Cebu, the Philippines, and both the admiral and the precious Japanese war plans floated ashore. Lt. Col. James M. Cushing was an American mining engineer who happened to be in Cebu when war broke out in the Pacific. He soon took charge of the local guerrillas and became a legendary leader. But his most spectacular exploit came when he captured Admiral Fukudome and the “Plan Z” that was in his tow.
The result was a ferocious cat-and-mouse game between Cushing’s guerrillas and the Japanese occupation forces. While Cushing desperately sent out messages to MacArthur to say what he had found, the Japanese scoured the entire countryside, killing hundreds of civilians in a full-scale attempt to retrieve their loss. Cushing finally traded the admiral in return for a cessation of civilian deaths—but he still secretly retained the Japanese war plans. Naturally both Tokyo and Washington tried to cover up what was happening at the time—neither wanted the other to know what they’d lost, or what they’d found. However, in this book we finally learn of the huge intelligence coup by Lt. Col. Cushing that helped to shorten the entire war." -Excerpts from the publisher's website.

Hardcover: 304
ISBN : 978-16-1-200307-8
Dimensions : 9 X 6 inches
Publisher: Casemate (July 2015)
Language: English

J.J.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/acca1e565c62b4070206fdf172158c89.jpg?v=1616553625
under-a-blood-red-sun-by-john-j-domagalski
Under a Blood Red Sun by John J. The war was something they encountered in the midst of their lives, the kind that won't go away, but that did leave spaces -- zones -- in which to harass the unwanted intruders by deceit, betrayal, robbery, or murder in the name of some cause when opportunity came along. The "Bandit Zone" was, in a way of speaking, a no an's land inhabited for a time by men, women and children, old and young, people of war and peace who -- interestingly -- left memorials of their passing in poetry and music. Bringing to light the songs of the "bandits" is not usual in traditional textbook history in the Philippines, but here they are. One can sing them again, and the power of music and lyrics has the virtue of canceling time has has come between today's reader and the now silenced brave hearts who became "bandits" for the love of liberty and national honor... The concluding chapter assesses the contribution the occupation made to postwar Southeast Asia in the light of the suffering and destruction rendered on the region.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ University of Hawaii Press; 1st edition (September 1, 2001)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 176 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0824824911
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0824824914
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 1.08 pounds
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.9 x 0.85 x 9.32 inches
At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor (60th Anniversary Edition) by Gordon W. She founded it under -Barbara, meaning foreign, strange. It was the right name for a feisty, smart, fiercely independent girl growing up bi-racial and poor in war torn Manila. Join Pooh in her adventures, wheter it's chasing after wild ducks, foiling a chicken tief, piloing her own makeshift airplane, or having the pluck to play violin for a very sad Japanese officer. Barbara Ann Gamboa-Lewis gives an unflinching, candid portrayal of her pre-teen years set against the backdrop of a war that tested to the edge the wills of men, women and children alike. Barbara Pollacks charming drawings perfectly capture the highs and lows of Lewis's unforgettable childhood. This is the personal narrative of a Filipino University of the Philippine student, Corban K. Alabado, whose studies were interrupted when he was drafted and inducted in to US Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) under General Douglas MacArthur and war broke out in 1941. He fought in Bataan, surrendered and survived the Death March and was imprisoned in the POW concentration camp at O'Donnell in Capas, Tarlac. After fighting alongside American soldiers and suffering and enduring the brutalities of the Japanese Imperial Forces, he found himself and his Filipino comrades completely ignored after the war in 1946. Thus to him and all Filipino soldiers, while the Japanese enemies were brutal, the aftermath "discarding us like a useless piece of rag" was more humiliating, painful and unjust.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ T'Boli Pub & Distributors (July 1, 1995)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 119 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 188776450X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1887764506
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 6.4 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.75 x 0.5 x 7.5 inches
Battle for Bataan: An Eyewitness Account by Richard C. Lee Ebner was looking forward to the end of his watch and a relaxed Sunday morning breakfast. But the two low-flying planes painted with rising sun insignia and bearing down on the ship had other plans for him and his fellow seamen. Ten hours later, at Clark Field in the Philippines, Pfc. Jack Reed felt the brunt of another Japanese air attack and within weeks found himself a part of the gruesome Bataan Death March that was to claim the lives of hundred of his comrades. On another continent, four years into the war, Capt. Benjamin Butler led his exhausted company up a steep, fog-shrouded Italian mountain toward a well entrenched German defensive position. The odds against their survival were appalling, though worse was to come in the months ahead. Such were the experiences of many young men-plucked from their local communities all across America, trained for war, and hurled into the strange reality of combat thousands of miles form home. In this stunning collection of World War II oral histories, Arthur Kelly recreates the experiences of twelve young men from Kentucky who survived the seemingly unsurvivable, whether in combat or as prisoners of war.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ University Press of Kentucky (November 1, 1997)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 226 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0813120349
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0813120348
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 1.34 pounds
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 6.5 x 1 x 9.5 inches
Traces the experiences of the author's father and three fellow Navy doctors who were captured during the World War II battles of Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippines, an event that united the men as allies as they attended patients under the brutal eye of their captors.

Starred Review. Four American doctors were captured by the Japanese when Corregidor surrendered in May 1942. George Ferguson came from Kansas City, Mo., and cleaned beer vats to help pay his way through college. John Bookman was the scion of a New York Jewish family that had been part of America's medical elite for generations. Fred Berley was from Chicago's West Side. Murray Glusman was the son of a New York City pharmacist. John Glusman is his son, and an editor at Farrar, Straus & Giroux. Consulting a wide range of archival and printed sources and complementing them with interviews of American, British and Australian survivors of Japanese prison camps, and the guards and administrators who ran them, Glusman has written a compelling account of courage and sacrifice from the perspective of the doctors who sought to keep their fellow captives alive under conditions that amounted to a mass sentence of death. He vividly shows Navy doctors working to exhaustion mending broken bodies, nursing a variety of exotic illnesses, treating spiritual as well as physical pain over three and a half years, deprived of bandages, instruments and the simplest of medicines. Over a third of American POWs held by the Japanese died in captivity. With grace and clarity, Glusman gives a keen sense of loss to that statistic, and a heroic dignity to those who survived—a major achievement indeed. Agent, David Black. Ostensibly the crew was to spy on Japanese naval movements, but to Tolley it was clear that their mission was to create an incident that would provoke war. Events overtook the plan, however, when Pearl Harbor was bombed before the Lanikai could get underway. When Bataan and Corregidor fell, she was ordered to set sail for Australia and became one of the few U.S. naval vessels to escape the Philippines. In this book Tolley tells the saga of her great adventure during these grim, early days of the war and makes history come alive as he regales the reader with details of the operation and an explanation of President Roosevelt's order. Husband Kimmel and Gen. Walter Short have been blamed for the unpreparedness that led to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. British historian Costello (Ten Days to Destiny), working from recently declassified documents, reveals that the two Hawaii commanders were denied information that could have saved the Pacific Fleet battleships and the lives of thousands of U.S. servicemen. A far more heinous command failure, in his view, was that Gen. Douglas MacArthur allowed his air force in the Philippines to be destroyed on the ground 10 hours after the Pearl Harbor debacle; his refusal to launch a preemptive strike against Japanese airbases as ordered doomed the defense of the Philippines before it could begin. MacArthur's inaction also contributed, the author contends, to the loss of Malaya and the Netherlands East Indies to the Japanese, because his bombers were the linchpin of a secret U.S. pact to defend British and Dutch territories in the Far East. Unlike Kimmel and Short, who had to retire in disgrace, MacArthur was never the subject of a formal inquiry. Although Costello clearly defines MacArthur's mistakes, his treatment of "the secret deals and strategic blunders" of President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill is less forthcoming. - Publishers Weekly

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Pocket Books; 1st Edition (December 1, 1994)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Hardcover ‏ : ‎ 448 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 067176985-5
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-06-7-176985-7
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 1.7 pounds
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 6.5 x 1.5 x 9.5 inches

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/rs_w_1200_h_1200_1_535c36b9-ec23-42ce-b25c-4d23fd309cf0.jpg?v=1631070521
december-1941-31-days-that-changed-america-and-saved-the-world-by-craig-shirley
December 1941: 31 Days That Changed America and Saved the World by Craig Shirley
In the days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, eyes in America were focused on the war in Europe or distracted by the elevated mood sweeping the country in the final days of the Great Depression. The son of Mexican immigrants, Joseph Quintero grew up in a converted railroad caboose in Fort Worth, Texas, and joined the Army to get $21 a month and three meals a day. He manned a machine gun in the defense of Corregidor before his unit was captured by the Japanese. When prisoners of war were transported to Japan, Joseph survived a razor-blade appendectomy on the ''hell ship'' voyage. In the prison camp he cared for his fellow prisoners as a medic and came to be known as Don Jose. Joseph's narrative is an enlisted man's view of the war with first-hand descriptions of conditions in the POW camps and personal glimpses of what he and his buddies did, endured and talked about. The authors have drawn on other histories and official documents to put his story into perspective and focus on a little-known chapter of World War II.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Sunstone Press; Illustrated edition (February 15, 2012)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 176 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 086534857-X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-08-6-534857-8
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 9.5 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 6 x 0.41 x 9 inches
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/rs_w_1200_h_1200_1_4c282e20-9f90-4afa-be08-557192d02823.jpg?v=1631072224
https://philippine-bookshop.myshopify.com/collections/history-japanese-occupation-world-war-ii.oembed?page=2
