In these fourteen stories, Montes explores the intricate workings of Filipino families as they struggle to define their place in the world. Two American-born sisters bumble their way through an unforgettable night at a Manila nightclub famed for its staff of midgets. The mother of legendary warrior Gabriela Silang has been lost to history, but here she is given voice to share her story. A lonely, middle-aged woman's life changes when she stumbles on a surrogate son and together they create a makeshift family. "Veronica Montes limn the lives of Filipino families," writes author Benito Vergara, "with wit, simmering fury, and an abundance of generosity. With her sharp eye for the telling detail, she depicts the grief and everyday joy handed down as inheritance, the affections and denials the bind Filipino families together."

Format: Paperback
Publisher: PALH (January 1, 2018)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 097194587-X
ISBN-13: 978-09-7-194587-6
Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.4 x 8.5 inches
Shipping Weight: 8.2 ounces
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/6dd0f5a76d9000a51f90bcf4eab14673.jpg?v=1616549580
Stories on the Asian immigrant experience continue to hold a certain fascination with readers everywhere. “Krystal Hut: Stories” is a finely wrought debut collection showcasing some of the author’s award-winning and previously published stories. They plumb the hearts and minds of characters from her island-nation - the Philippines - as they face cultural and generational obstacles to assimilation. In "Achara," an elderly mother reunites with her children from all over the United States and must make a bitter-sweet decision to maintain her pride and independence. In "Dust Storm," a wife and mother in California suddenly loses her entire family in a Thanksgiving Day accident and manages to find a hopeful future in her adopted country.

The lead story, "Krystal Hut," focuses on a middle-aged Filipino widower whose longing and search for an ideal wife from the old country collide with the cold realities of modern-day immigration. Set in Hawaii, "Liquid Sunshine" is a portrait of a Filipina whose grandparents were killed by the Japanese, and of her love affair with third-generation Japanese man. Loss of status is overriding theme of “The Grocer’s Husband,” in which a Filipino physician joins his wife in America to find she has given up nursing to run a grocery store in a decaying suburban city. Some of the stories take us back to the Philippines, a country with a deep American imprint. "Baby Saint" is the heart-breaking tale of a washerwoman and her baby born into poverty that will at once steal the heart of the reader and elicit a smile. “MacArthur Fever” explores a young girl’s fevered yearning induced by her first encounter with ice. In “Guano” people wake up to find their tiny Pacific Island dead and denuded, even as an Australian mogul attempts to turn it into a gold mine. Tragic, poignant, strange, infused with humor and irony, and written in understated prose, these are stories that speak to the pilgrim in all of us.

Paperback: 214 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (April 4, 2013)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 147814764-4
ISBN-13: 978-14-7-814764-0
Product Dimensions: 5.2 x 0.5 x 8 inches
Shipping Weight: 10.9 ounces
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/1c844e1303006ce902632acffa5880e2.jpg?v=1616549610
the-oracles-my-filipino-grandparents-in-america-by-pati-navalta-poblete
The Oracles: My Filipino Grandparents in America (First Edition) by Pati Navalta Poblete

First Edition: Out of print title.

Autographed copies available.

A funny, poignant memoir of growing up in California with a house full of immigrant grandparents presents an altogether honest and engaging portrait of generational strife and the clash of values in a Filipino American household that seeks to maintain its ties to family and homeland.

Paperback: 125 pages
Publisher: Heyday Books; 1st edition (August 15, 2006)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 159714036-8
ISBN-13: 978-15-9-714036-2
Product Dimensions: 5.5 x 0.8 x 8.5 inches
Shipping Weight: 8 ounces

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/ba7ae45c7cb7ba45cf0ca3a2fe11c2fa.jpg?v=1616550157
hazards-of-memory-tnt-travails-and-triumphs-of-a-pinoy-emigrant-in-the-u-s-a-by-ester-vallado-daroy
The Hazards of Memory by E. Stickmon reminds us that patience and a listening ear can inspire a woman's creative power to overflow without warning.

Publisher : Broken Shackle Publishing, International (August 3, 2012)
Language : English
Paperback : 196 pages
ISBN-10 : 097599082-9
ISBN-13 : 978-09-7-599082-7
Item Weight : 7.7 ounces
Dimensions : 5 x 0.49 x 8 inches

2 in FILIPINO AMERICAN POETS - Female (General)
2 in FILIPINO AMERICAN EXPERIENCE & FILIPINOS IN THE DIASPORA - Female Writers (General)

somewhere-in-the-middle-a-journey-to-the-philippines-in-search-of-roots-belonging-and-identity-by-deborah-francisco-douglas
Somewhere in the Middle: A Journey to the Philippines in Search of Roots, Belonging, and Identity by Deborah Francisco Douglas

Half Filipino but raised in an American household, Deborah Francisco Douglas had always longed to know more about her Filipino heritage. So when a thick government-issued envelope arrived at her door announcing her assignment to the Philippines as a Peace Corps Volunteer, she snatched the opportunity and set out on a journey of self-discovery, travel, and adventure. Arriving in the mountain town of Baguio City, Philippines, she was introduced to a life of obnoxious roosters, bucket baths, and kids shouting her name every time she walked down the street. Despite her attempts to get involved in the community, her desire for belonging and identity did not materialize as quickly as planned. Realizing that “Filipino time” means nothing ever happens in a hurry, Deborah braces for the journey ahead, hoping to find answers, and above all, to find herself. Filled with warmth and humor, Somewhere in the Middle captures the simple joy found in ordinary moments and in the people we share our lives with, shedding new light on what it truly means to find the place where you belong. Whether you’re hoping to unearth your own cultural roots, volunteer abroad, or find your next travel adventure, this memoir offers inspiration for all those yearning to discover who they are and where they belong in the world."Douglas is an amiable narrator, and those searching for their own roots will take pleasure in this heartfelt memoir." ~ Publishers Weekly"[Somewhere in the Middle] is a youthful, refreshing take..." ~ Elizabeth Ann Quirino

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Peaceful Mountain Press (March 6, 2019)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 254 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 173357560X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1733575607
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 10.2 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.25 x 0.64 x 8 inches

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/51Wr3MkLocL._SX326_BO1_204_203_200.jpg?v=1657127659
keeping-it-together-autographed-copy-by-marichelle-roque-lutz
Keeping it Together (Autographed Copy) by Marichelle Roque-Lutz

Keeping it Together is the autobiography of an intelligent and spirited woman, Marichelle Roque-Lutz. Her style is candid and breezy, although it turns tender and affectionate when she writes of her four daughters. The three sections cover the Philippines, Nigeria, and America. The first part is the fastest paced, narrating her youth, loves, marriage, motherhood, separation, relationshop and finally a lasting marriage to a foreigner ten years her junior. The second part of introduces us to life in Nigeria, in general familiar for being like us a Third World Country but infamiliar for its individual cultural characteristics. The third part finds her settling in the United States where she is finally reunited with all her daughters and pursues her literary interests. It is a time when the freedom of manners has expanded to the freedom of morals and she had to be there for her daughters. Ms. Roque-Lutz displays excellent taste in classical music and an admirable opposition to the Macros dictatorship. She is reticent about her religious evolution. Toward the end, however, she finally narrates briefly her more internal spiritual journey from rigid Catholic through various stages of religious experience to an abandonment of Christianity, although she is a member of a Christian church community that tolerates her searching mode. As a searcher one hopes she finds what she is looking for. -Benito Jr. Legarda, historian, author

314 pages
Publisher: Marichelle Roque-Lutz
Langauge: English
ISBN: 978-621-95899-0-1

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/ScreenShot2022-07-07at11.38.42AM.png?v=1657219156
bittermelons-and-mimosas-a-philippine-memoir-by-nieves-catahan-villamin
Bittermelons and Mimosas: A Philippine Memoir by Nieves Catahan Villamin
Nieves Villamin's book is an indispensable reference for anyone interested in Philippine history, customs, and superstitions. As a child in the Philippines, Nieves' life was a challenge - backbreaking fieldwork, a father who often wasn't there, and dirt-poor living conditions. Yet, this little girl found things to be thankful for such as the singing of the workers while they toiled under blistering sun. Her childlike sense of hope will inspire young readers and make them grateful for living conditions in America. Full of historical data, the memoir also describes in detail a sort of magical thinking that ruled the Philippine people; plus, it celebrates foods, traditions, and rituals that will interest all. How she and her young husband escaped to America and found "a land of opportunity" will amuse, impress, and inspire all-age readers. I enjoyed reading this memoir; in fact, I read it three times. She's too tough to spend any time thinking about any of that. She decides against thought and drifts into drugs and alcohol, and, more positively into art and imagination. She never shows her drawings to anyone and never shares her thoughts or the funny things she imagines that do give her delight (such as the sights and sounds of Spike Jones and Ravi Shanker in love). Carol disguises herself as normal. She acquires a husband, a home, a Honda, a health plan. Cocktails. Some sort of peace. . .till the pop gun and the sitar go off, and the good life falls away. The scream-need starts up again, breaks right through the anesthesia, at about the same time she is convicted of Driving Under the Influence. Attempting to cut down on her drinking while doing time cleaning up a golf course on weekends, she finds herself irresistibly drawn to a woman on her clean-up crew who asks her to not have a drink for one month and see what happens. Carol changes her name to Orion, gives up alcohol, at least for the month, and embraces her love for the woman. The tantalizing belief arises that she, as Orion, can be visible and known and, even so, loved. Discovery. The universe. Then, betrayal. Nothing twinkling in that night sky. But there is a new and frightening possibility. Knowledge and courage. It might kill her to try this path, but she decides to face the deeply unknown. She leaves the comfort of her home in San Francisco but picks up and takes with her the nightmare memories of her childhood experiences in downtown Los Angeles. She decides to do something she's never done before: She sets out on a long trek, alone, backpacking in the mountains of Northern California. She takes no alcohol or drugs, no compass, not even cigarettes or something to read. She will know and understand and deal with whatever it is she has avoided all her life. The Graciela family and their servants could not imagine that they would be the last generation to luxuriate in this faux-feudal tranquility. In 1941, the Japanese seized the lovely, peaceful land in pursuit of their vision of an expanded empire for Japan. In an era where the slightest religious and moral transgression merits death, Isabel andMarcus tempt fate through secret meetings deep in the catacombs of the archbishop's palace. Eventually arrested and accused of adultery, witchcraft, and debauchery, Isabel eventually goes mad in the inquisitors' prisons, while Marcus escapes and leaves Isabel to her fate.The Frog Asylum is a tapestry of love lost and sacrificed, of dreams and tortured reality, of lust and betrayal, of social discord and all-too-human vices, and of unsettling martyrdom.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ iUniverse (December 13, 2000)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 108 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0595155561
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0595155569
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 7.4 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 6 x 0.27 x 9 inches

Out of print title.

A powerful and insightful new novel from award-winning Filipino-American author, Almira Astudillo Gilles. Inspired by a true event , the novel tells the story of a poor bulldozer operator who unearths gold artifacts during a construction project. Much more than the familiar narrative of unexpected fortune and perilous descent, this is an exploration of discovery and concealment, greed and generosity, secularization and spirituality. It examines the demands we place on ourselves, our relationships, and institutions. It asks if we are justified in pursuing the kind of life we want despite the demands of others and examines who should judge such choices. The ancestral gold treasure described in the novel pre-dates the arrival of Spanish explorers in the Philippines. Many of these gold artifacts are on display in a permanent collection at the Ayala Museum in the Philippines.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Philippine American Writers and Artists, Inc.; First Edition (January 1, 2012)
Paperback : 407 pages
Language ‏ : ‎ English
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0976331675
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0976331674
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 1.01 pounds

The Deliverer...

A riveting story about love, materialism, and challenges faced by unbelievers, rich and famous. Out of the blue Caridad's mother summons her home. She stopped asking questions about the past long ago; her mother's constant reluctance to answer finally subdued her curiosity. Arlene Chai tells their versions of the story in their own voices, each one distinct, moving, and magical. As each woman tells her part of their family's hidden history, Caridad hears at last the unspoken stories--the joys and sorrows that her parents kept to themselves, and the never forgotten tragedy of the war years, when Japan's brutal occupation and civilian deprivations helped destroy a country and its history.

The Last Time I Saw Mother is about mothers and daughters. Merced-Malana recollects early milestones and in the process captures snapshots of a simple lifestyle that is rapidly becoming extinct. Each story is a swath of the brush that paints an intriguing portrait of daily life in a little town in northern Philippines. She describes a time when the church bells echoed the pulse of the townspeople in the praying of the Angelus morning, noon, and night; the shrill joy of weddings and baptisms; and the mournful tolls of funerals. With stark honesty and unabashed innocence, the many faces of war are depicted through the eyes of a child. IN A QUIET VILLAGE recounts a personal view of the sleepy years prior to World War II through Japanese occupation and beyond.

Paperback : 63 pages
Publisher : RoseDog Books
Language ‏ : ‎ English
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 080599260X
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0805992601
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 4.8 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.75 x 0.25 x 8.75 inches

1 in FILIPINO AMERICAN EXPERIENCE
1 in BIOGRAPHY

Out of Stock.

We do not have an inventory of this title.
