Five Faces of Exile addresses this gap by exploring a wide range of perspectives on colonial, anti-colonial, and postcolonial developments. More specifically, it explores American empire in the Philippines and its ethnic and racial dimensions in the United States through a close reading of the texts and social practices of five pioneering, trans-Pacific Filipino American writers of the colonial era: the diplomat Carlos P. Romulo, the poet Jose Garcia Villa, fiction writers N. V. M. Gonzalez and Bienvenido N. Santos, and the celebrated Asian American worker-writer Carlos Bulosan. In this first transnational intellectual history of an Asian American group, Espiritu shows that an exploration of those at the margins of the nation, who feel at home neither in the Philippines nor in the United States, raises profound questions about citizenship and national belonging. This beautifully written book explores the common desire for national solidarity and cultural translation and the shared ambivalence at the heart of Filipino American expatriate intellectual life, as well as the social practices of patronage and performance that shaped ethnic and national identities.

Book Details
Publisher : Temple University Press (October 28, 2009)
Language: : English
Pages: 228 pages

Hardbound Details
Item Weight : 12.8 ounces
ISBN-10 : 159213728-8
ISBN-13 : 978-15-9-213728-2
Dimensions : 5.5 x 0.8 x 8.25 inches

Softbound Details
Item Weight : 9.6 ounces
ISBN-10 : 159213729-6
ISBN-13 : 978-15-9-213729-9
Dimensions : 5.5 x 0.6 x 8.25 inches

C.E.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/14f34578eceb81d658e86c2fdba1c22b.jpg?v=1616552560
the-brothers-luna-madmen-or-geniuses-by-jules-delgallego
The Brothers Luna: Madmen or Geniuses by Jules Delgallego
The Brothers Luna is a novel based on historical facts intertwined with a compelling story of romance, passion, friendship, intrigue, murder, espionage, war and the arts. Two brothers. One cause. Both willing to die for the freedom of the Philippines from foreign rule. Juan and Antonio Luna find themselves in late 19th century Europe after taking advantage of the Royal Education Decree of 1863, which allowed native Filipinos to be fully educated in the school system across Spain's colonial islands as well as in the major universities of Europe. After attending the Academia de Bellas Artes in Madrid, Juan Luna astonishes the European art scene by garnering numerous gold medals in various highly acclaimed art competitions. Antonio Luna becomes a pharmacist, but passion for reform inspires him to become a propagandist' and later, a general in the army, and the fearless soul of integrity of the Philippine revolutionary forces. In the aftermath of personal tragedy for Juan Luna, the brothers seek a new beginning, but are unknowingly caught in a web of political intrigue and rebellion against Spain's colonial authorities controlled by the powerful Dominican friars. As general, Antonio leads his soldiers into combat against the powerful invading American forces under General Arthur MacArthur. However, deprived of authority by his President, Antonio Luna's fiery temper and fighting spirit result in betrayal and tragedy. Juan Luna vows revenge but falls into a deep depression to a point of sheer madness, and eventually, returns to the Philippines to face his destiny.

Publisher : CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (December 24, 2013)
Language: : English
Paperback : 418 pages
ISBN-10 : 149479126-9
ISBN-13 : 978-14-9-479126-1
Item Weight : 1.23 pounds
Dimensions : 6 x 0.95 x 9 inches

C.E.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0523/0785/3478/products/c86baee52c1769731d2300cace1449b4.jpg?v=1616554520
it-s-all-about-something-by-alexander-villarasa
It's All About Something by Alexander Villarasa, M.D.

"This engrossing anthology, ranging from unrequited love to the big bang and quantum mechanics, promises something to get lost in and remember. In the turbulent Basque city of Bilbao, Jaime Aragon, a young foreign intern is mesmerized by a colleague, a mysterious American named Allison Flynn. She is beautiful, alluring, and haunted by a horrid past. Allison hints of a genuine interest in Jaime, but her close friendship with a charismatic young Spaniard, Francisco, who happens to run a secret ETA terrorist cell at the university complicates matters. His instincts scream for him to stay away from her. Still, he cannot help himself. Against the backdrop of Spanish fiestas and moonlit plazas sometimes marred by exploding Basque separatist bombs, Jaime pursues Allison. She is a complex woman; vulnerable, unpredictable, elusive. It is this very complexity that impels him toward her until he learns about a heart-rending secret that leaves his life in turmoil. Featuring a multicultural cast including French student Simone, Brazilian Elena, Scandinavian Bjorn, Filipino Jaime, and Californian Allison, The Band of Gypsies takes us across a quilt of mystifying stories as seen through Jaime's eyes.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Blue Owl Editions; First Edition (March 13, 2011)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 198 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0967279305
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0967279305
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 10.4 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.5 x 0.45 x 8.5 inches

“Promised Land” by Simeon G. Silverio, Jr. PROMISED LAND, the inspiring story of two cousins who married Filipino American U.S. Navy personnel to be able to migrate to the United States and help their relatives back home only to find out that the adventure was not as easy as they hoped it to be. As a piece of Filipino American experience, this story applies to the lives of all people. Excerpts from the book: “You must join the U.S. Navy so we can live abroad,” Isabel often told her boyfriend Lando as they walked in the park, weaving dreams for their future together. He would just shrug his shoulders in response. – from Chapter 1 – Her U.S. Navy Dreamboat The clash of two cultures, Filipino and Mexican, had taken its toll. He grew weary of the enchiladas, tacos, burritos and other Mexican dishes she prepared repeatedly. He longed for the Filipino dishes from his native land that he would always eat as a child. Teresa would not let him cook his favorite adobo and tuyo (dried fish) due to their stinking up the house. When he brought her to the Philippines, Teresa refused to stay and sleep in their house in the barrio. “It is hot and there are lizards on the ceiling,” she complained. – from Chapter 3, Trophy Wife “Let me make this clear with you again,” Ditas once told Romy when he accosted her while tipsy from drinking with friends nearby. “I will never marry you even if you are the last man on earth.” The friends laughed hard and Romy retreated in shame. The next day he left town and she didn’t hear from him until she received a letter from the United States Naval Base in San Diego from her jilted suitor, now a member of the U.S. Navy. – from Chapter 5 - The Last man on Earth One evening, when Romy and his friends were drinking in the house, Ditas showed Andy the photo of Isabel. “Check her out, Andy,” she told him. “She’s looking for a boyfriend here in America.” “No way,” Andy replied. “I know what she’s up to. She will just marry and leave me once she gets her green card.” “But she’s very pretty,” Romy told his friend. “With your looks, you can never have a wife as beautiful as her.” – from Chapter 8 – Pretty Girl’s Photo “Is this your first time riding an airplane?” her seatmate, a woman in her fifties, asked Isabel. “How did you know?” “Because you’re holding your bag tightly and you look scared. And also, that huge envelope in plastic bag contains the x-ray film carried by first time immigrants.” Isabel sheepishly smiled. – from Chapter 12 – Land of Milk and Honey

Publisher ‏ : ‎ Asian Journal San Diego (September 8, 2011)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 232 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 0615537413
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0615537412
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 8.6 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.25 x 0.53 x 8 inches

Philippine Homecoming's Cherished Memories by Simeon G. Excerpts from the book Seeing the Philippines for the first time after many years would give any former resident a “culture shock.” The roads, which looked to be wider before, appeared narrow. The buildings and the streets, which were dilapidated and dirty before, looked more dilapidated and dirty now. – Chapter 2 – Balikbayan Culture Shock All of a sudden, the small kids from before were now grown up. Their faces had changed, yet somehow looked familiar. Some of his relatives who lived in a compound beside them had already died. Gone forever during a span of just ten years were his maternal grandmother, three uncles, two aunties and two cousins. – Chapter 3 – Like A Video Tape Experience Their vehicle moved towards the man and again they asked: “Boss, alam mo ba ang bahay ni Maning Bakla (Boss, do you know the residence of Maning, the homosexual?)?” The man looked serious and glumly said: “Yes, I am Maning, what do you want?” They were embarrassed as they were sure that Maning did not appreciate the unsavory nickname. – Chapter 6 – Maning Bakla And the Duty Free Shops In Manila There was a full moon above, and they could see its reflections on the water as the waves slapped on the sand. They could feel the cool breeze kiss their face, the warm water wet their feet. On that cold December evening in Maryland Beach Resort in Nasugbu, Batangas, Philippines, they wanted to freeze time and enjoy every moment of their stay – Chapter 10 – Nasugbu Market Place And The IUD BBQ Manila Mayor Antonio Villegas proved to be an innovative mayor; for example, he introduced the free elementary and high school education in the city, the first of its kind in the country. He was also a poet in the vernacular; at every opportunity, he would recite or talk in the form of a poem he himself composed. In answer to his critics, he once said: “Marami ang nagtatanong kung bakit ako tumutula, bakit, ang tula ba ay masama (Many are asking why I am reciting a poem, why, is a poem bad)?” Chapter 17 – When “Gatpuno” Villegas warmed his “Salumpuwit” at Maharnilad Their playmates from the barrio were cautious and made a sign of the cross when passing ant hills, which they would call “nuno sa punso”. They would reverently say, “Makikiraan, po (Please allow us to pass!)!” Chapter 31 - Nuno Sa Punso And Other Weird Provincial Experiences The boys, usually five at a time, would line up and march without their pants towards the rice fields at the back of the house. They would pass by a guava tree, pull out several leaves and wash them in the artesian well. Once in the field, the quack doctor would hammer a stake into the ground made of a branch of a guava tree with the other end bent towards the boy. – Chapter 34 - Circumcision: Why Do Some Boys Walk Bow-Legged During Summertime In The Province?

Publisher ‏ : ‎ CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (September 13, 2011)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 242 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1466325232
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1466325234
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 11.5 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.98 x 0.51 x 9.02 inches

Panagani (Harvest Time) by Quirico S. In Kilometer Zero, prizewinning essayist Wilfredo Pascual gathers the shards of personal experience and grapples with time, space, and nature to illuminate a world turned upside down. In seven incandescent stories accompanied by original photographs, the author depicts home as a foreign country and elsewhere as a hazy image of the self. Across striking landscapes, we find a runaway child, sex-reversed tilapias, a nocturnal lemur, mass murderers, a heroic farmworkers’ strike, and deadly earthquakes. Along the way, Pascual discovers writing itself as shelter and love as full of the world. From San Francisco to Siem Reap, from Thailand to the Philippines, Wilfredo Pascual writes with beauty and courage: “The wayward universe of the past is my new wilderness and it tugs relentlessly, this epic finding of a rightful place. It won’t let go.” Critic J Pilapil Jacobo describes these essays as “tropical writing, diasporic, queer in its confidence, and ultimately human in its confession." “You Have Me,” the author’s award-winning essay on genetics ancestry, a dying father and a son’s marriage is "...durable, clear... With the employment of the dramatic method, the novel is packed with action. The protagonist narrator's .22 revolver and his shirt are stolen from his jeep, eventually turning up near a dead body. He is tortured by the police until he is forced to admit the crime he has not committed. Silverio, Jr.

“Betel Nuts & Other Stories” by Simeon G. Silverio, Jr. Entertaining and easy-to-read short stories about growing up in the Philippines. Excerpts from the book One day, however, the duckling went inside an opening under the house. Borobot waited for it to come out but it did not. He kept waiting even when it got dark, but there was no sign of the duckling. When his father came home that evening, he told him about his missing duckling. His dad took a flashlight and pointed it toward the opening. He inserted a long stick inside and tried to stir it. They could hear some squealing but no quacking. Finally, his dad told him the bad news: “The rats have eaten your duckling.” Borobot cried and cried for a very long time. – from Chapter 2 – Childhood Tales If there is a person that can aptly be called “the son of a bitch”, which in Pilipino, is synonymous to the phrase, “the son of a whore” (“anak ng puta”), it would be Tikboy. Tikboy was one of Eric’s playmates on Platerias Street where Eric lived with his family on the second floor of his father’s printing business in Manila in 1957. Tikboy’s mother, Purita, worked as a prostitute in a brothel across the street from Eric’s house. – from Chapter 6 - Just Like Any Mother From where he sat, he could tell Juanita had just bathed. Her hair was still damp and the fragrant scent of her cheap bath soap wafted through the air. She hardly noticed him as she was minding her own business. While he pretended to be concentrating on his reading, he would occasionally take a sneak peak at her, feasting his eyes on all of her seductive beauty. For a hot-blooded fourteen-year-old, she was not just an object of curiosity. – from Chapter 9 – Fragrant Scent of Bath Soap And All By the time they reached Platerias Street, everything was quiet. There was hardly a soul in sight; it was ten minutes past midnight. Narding frantically ran inside the brothel in search of Clarita, but he was told the Chinese took her just ten minutes before. He ran outside towards P. Paterno Street. Finding no speeding taxi, he ran back towards Carriedo Street, turned right towards Rizal Avenue, hoping the taxi holding Clarita had broken down. Finally, a loud, agonizing cry was heard all over in that quiet neighborhood of Quiapo. – from Chapter 11 – True Love Everyone was looking up at the top of an electric post, where sparks of light shone bright against the dark of the night. When the firemen trained the spotlight to the top of the post, they saw a body of a man lying on a wood across the post. It was Fred, the drunkard pimp. Without anybody noticing, he woke from deep slumber and this time, successfully climbed the top of the post. He was electrocuted while celebrating his feat. – from Chapter 15 – A Day In The Life Of The People Of Platerias Street

About the Author

Simeon G. Silverio, Jr. was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and educated at the Juan Sumulong Elementary School and Arellano High School, in Manila. He obtained his AB degree in Journalism at the University of the Philippines and took graduate courses for a Master in Communications and a Master in Business Administration at the Ateneo de Manila University. He was a managing editor of Sunburst Publications, publisher of international magazines. He also edited Business Ventures in the Philippines & Asia. He was reluctant to leave his thriving career in the Philippines when he had an opportunity to migrate to the United States in 1982. However, the assassination of Marcos critic Benigno Aquino a few months later, which resulted in the collapse of the Philippine economy, gave him the obvious choice. He knew he would be competing against U.S. educated American journalists with English as mother tongue in mainstream newspapers. Even if he were hired, he would just be given minor assignments that would not give him much professional fulfillment. Aware that his advantage was his knowledge of the Asian and Filipino community, he published the Asian Journal, the first Filipino weekly newspaper in San Diego County. It had been a successful business and fulfilled him professionally. Like others, he first wrote and commented about the conditions in the Philippines. Writers had done it before; sadly, their suggestions often fell on deaf ears. He realized such articles would only be relevant for a few days and would soon be overtaken by events and forgotten. He remembered his parents telling them stories of their childhood during dinners. He lamented the fact his Filipino American daughters, born and raised in America, did not have any idea of their Filipino parents' backgrounds. From then on, he started writing about his memories while growing up in the Philippines so his daughters and grandchildren will eventually know and appreciate them. He hopes his readers will also pass on such information, as contained in his writings, to their progeny so the next generation of Filipino Americans, at least in San Diego, will not be totally in the dark about their Filipino heritage. This is one of the reasons why he continues to write, and why his writings are published into books - so they can be preserved for posterity. In 1999, he co-founded the Los Angeles Asian Journal and later moved on to focus on his business interests in San Diego, California, where he lives.

Publisher ‏ : ‎ CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (September 8, 2011)
Language ‏ : ‎ English
Paperback ‏ : ‎ 234 pages
ISBN-10 ‏ : ‎ 1466284544
ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-1466284548
Item Weight ‏ : ‎ 8.8 ounces
Dimensions ‏ : ‎ 5.25 x 0.5 x 8 inches

We only have 1 copy left. If interested, email us: info@philippinebookshop.com but do not pay for your order first.
